Howl first meets Sophie when he saves her from being attacked by two shadey shoulders after taking her on a skywalk over the rooftops, he then disappears. Howl owns the moving castle that roams the hills of Sophie's home.

The only family we know Howl has is his uncle who was a wizard. The reason Howl became a wizard was because of his uncle. He was trained by the royal magician, Madam Suliman, but disappeared before he could finish his training after making the deal with Calcifer.
